Spider syllables
aka the eight-legged night
by Alison Ross
the night speaks in spider syllables.
it writes webs of idioms,
ensnaring dialects as prey.
the night stutters and stammers in arachnid tones,
transcribing the skies into a confusion of clouds.
but the stars' syntax shines clarity
onto the eight-legged night.
the moon's belly grows plump with a feast of words,
then the rain comes down in question marks
to wash the spider syllables away.
